Does this clear way to store symbols have the drawbacks I am perceiving?
Let’s say I am writing a compiler for a language. In this language I have identifiers such as float, bool, string, etc. Now these are not structs so they cannot be stored in-line like int, int or bool. The only way I see to store these is as symbols.
So essentially I am using a hash table to store these symbols. If I store the symbols in an array of structs, then I would be required to take the size of the array into consideration when adding symbols (the number of symbols could grow in the future). However, if I use a hash table the symbols are only stored with the value and this value can not grow.
I’m wondering if this clear way to store symbols has the potential problems that I’m perceiving? Or is this an accepted practice? I’m not asking about any specifics, just the big picture.

It’s a well-known problem that hash tables are not very suitable for storing symbols, because symbol strings are too long to fit efficiently in a hash table (the size of the symbol hash table is logarithmic in the size of the symbol string).
If you care about hash table lookup times, you’d better use a “string table” or a “symbol table” instead of a hash table. An obvious string table or symbol table algorithm would be to concatenate all symbol strings of a given language into a single large string, sort it
